St. Esther was the queen of Persia through marriage. She was married to king Ahasuerus, more commonly referred to as Xerxes I who reigned from 486 – 465 BC. According to records, the king was looking for a new wife after his queen Vashti refused to obey him. He chose Esther because of her beauty.
Haman the kings chief adviser was offended by Esther’s cousin and guardian, Mordecai. Haman thus got permission from the king to have all the Jews in the kingdom killed. But Esther foiled this plot and won permission from the king for the Jews to kill their enemies. They celebrate the feast of Purim to remember their delivery.
Queen Esther was the daughter of Abihail from the tribe of Benjamin. Her Jewish name was Edissa. She was adopted by her uncle Mardochai. He was her father’s brother.
