The Significance of Saint Eustathius

This wonderful icon has been created with the technique of lithography and has a double varnish to ensure waterproof and duration in time. The creator of this icon has learned the canonization of iconography in workshops of the Monasteries of Mount Athos, where he was taught both the technique of lithography and the process of handmade artificial ageing, which bears the image with the representation of Saint Eustathius.

Eustathios was originally called Plakida and was a senior officer in the Roman army. One day while hunting a deer, he saw a cross on his horns and heard a voice calling him to become a Christian. With this vision he believed in the new religion and was baptized a Christian named Eustathios. His wife Tatian, who took the name Theopistis, and his two children, who took the names Agapios and Theopistos, were also baptized Christians.

When Emperor Trajan was informed that his officer had embraced Christianity, he dismissed him and exiled him along with his family. Then, his punishment included separation from his family, a fact that made Efstathios very angry.

Years later, Trajan remembered his most capable officer, Eustathios, when he was in trouble, and brought him back to the army. Along the way, he found his family again and felt great joy.

However, Trajan's successor, Hadrian, demanded that Eustathios worship the idols again. Efstathios refused, as a result of which he and his family were tortured to death.
