The Significance of Saint George
Saint George, the great martyr, was born in Cappadocia in 275 AD to Christian parents. After his father’s martyrdom, George and his mother moved to Palestine. At 18, he joined the Roman army, rising to high ranks.
When Emperor Diocletian launched a campaign against Christians, George boldly confessed his faith. Enraged, Diocletian imprisoned and tortured him. Miraculously, George survived brutal ordeals, including being tied to a wheel and thrown into a lime pit.
After further torture, George dreamt of Christ foretelling his martyrdom. Refusing to renounce his faith, George was beheaded. His relics were later taken to Lydda, and his feast is celebrated on April 23rd.
