This wonderful icon has been created with the technique of lithography and has a double varnish to ensure waterproof and duration in time. The creator of this icon has learned the canonization of iconography in workshops of the Monasteries of Mount Athos, where he was taught both the technique of lithography and the process of handmade artificial ageing, which bears the image with the representation of Saint George.

The faithful servant of George, Pasikratis, fulfilling the saint’s wish, took over the relic of the great martyr and, along with that of the mother of Saint Polychronia, carried it to Lydda, Palestine. From there the Crusaders transferred them to the West. The Church celebrates the memory of Saint George on April 23rd.

Saint Demetrios was born in Thesaloniki, Greece in 270 AD. He came from a wealthy family and because he was athletic in appearance and heroic in spirit, he became a high-ranking officer in the Roman Army at a very young age. (This is why he is depicted in Byzantine icons in military dress, either standing or riding a horse.) He considered himself a soldier of Christ first, and a military soldier second. He spent most of his time as a devout missionary, preaching the Gospel at secret meetings and converting pagans to the Christian faith.
