One of the most revered saints in the Orthodox Church is Saint John the Baptist, known for heralding the coming day of the Lord. He is often depicted with a disheveled appearance and a sparse beard, reflecting a strict and serious expression. His hands and body are rendered as emaciated, symbolizing his austere life in the desert, where he subsisted on locusts and wild honey. His face is portrayed as scrawny and dark-skinned, emphasizing the harsh conditions he endured. Clothed in camel hair, he is shown with his head resting on the ground, a poignant reference to his martyrdom.

In a significant moment from his story, Herodias—daughter of Herod's living brother, Philip—encouraged her daughter Salome to request the head of John the Baptist as a gift from her stepfather. This was prompted by John's bold words, which unsettled the corrupt minds of those in power.
