Saint John the Baptist is one of the most revered figures in the Orthodox Church, known for announcing the coming of the Lord. His face is portrayed as disheveled, with a sparse beard, reflecting a strict and serious expression. His body and hands are depicted fleshless, symbolizing his ascetic lifestyle of locusts and wild honey in the desert. The dark, scrawny features convey the intense heat of his environment, and he is dressed in camel hair, with his head lying on the ground to signify his martyrdom.

Herodias, the daughter of Herod's brother Philip, prompted her daughter Salome to request the head of John the Baptist as a gift from her stepfather, as his words troubled the corrupt.
