This wonderful icon has been created with the technique of lithography and has a double varnish to ensure waterproof and duration in time. The creator of this icon has learned the canonization of iconography in workshops of the Monasteries of Mount Athos, where he was taught both the technique of lithography and the process of handmade artificial ageing.
The Saint Leonidas was Bishop of Athens and witness of the Church, whose memory is honored by the Church on April 15 . He slept peacefully in the year 250 . In some codes he is mentioned as a witness, but this is not proven [1] .
She lived in the third century and martyred with seven other women (Harissi, Niki, Galini, Kallida, Nunechia, Vasilissa, Theodora).
Originally from the area of Troizina, he acted in the area of Epidaurus. He developed a close spiritual bond with seven women, a bond that we do not know exactly when it began, but some evidence that exists testifies to this sacred relationship. In 1833 the then pastor of the community, priest Nikolaos Natsoulis, built a church in honor and glory of St. Leonidas. [2]
In Athens there is an early Christian church (crypt) in the name of Saint Leonides behind the pillars of Olympian Zeus. [3]
In 1916, after constant dreams, pious inhabitants of Epidaurus, searched and found a "hidden treasure" under the foundations of the ruins of the holy temple of the Most Holy Theotokos. When, at last, they dug at the place that had been indicated, they found a sacred icon of the Virgin Mary and then at a depth of 70 cm, they found seven skeletons that, as it turned out, belonged to women. At the same time, a stone slab was presented which, after being moved, revealed a male skeleton which testified that this man had been strangled while a fragrance was emerging from the tomb. [4]
