The Significance of Saint Maria of Egypt & Saint Zossima

St. Mary of Egypt is a revered Orthodox Christian saint who lived during the 5th century. She is remembered for her dramatic conversion and life of asceticism in the desert.

According to tradition, Mary was born in Egypt and became a prostitute at a young age. She traveled to Jerusalem during the time of the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, and while trying to enter the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, she was stopped by an invisible force. This experience led her to repent of her sins and seek forgiveness.

Mary then lived as a hermit in the desert for over forty years, living a life of extreme asceticism and prayer. She was known for her miraculous abilities and is said to have had visions of angels and demons throughout her life.

Eventually, she met a monk named Zosimas who was wandering in the desert, and she recounted her life story to him. Mary received communion from Zosimas before passing away, and he buried her with the help of a lion that appeared to him.

St. Mary of Egypt is commemorated in the Orthodox Church on the fifth Sunday of Great Lent and is revered as an example of repentance and asceticism. Her story is a reminder that no one is beyond redemption and that through God's mercy, we can all find forgiveness and salvation.
