The Significance of Saint Maximilian Kolbe

This wonderful icon has been created with the technique of lithography and has a double varnish to ensure waterproof and duration in time. The creator of this icon has learned the canonization of iconography in workshops of the Monasteries of Mount Athos, where he was taught both the technique of lithography and the process of handmade artificial ageing.

Saint Maximilian Kolbe (1894-1941) was a Polish Franciscan friar, born Rajmund Kolbe, whose whole life was marked by a burning devotion to the Mother of God. A gifted organiser and publisher, he founded a great friary near Warsaw and spread devotion to the Immaculate Virgin through the printed word, even during years of illness.

Arrested by the occupying forces, he was sent to Auschwitz. When ten men were selected to die of starvation in reprisal for an escape, he stepped forward and offered his own life in place of a young father with a wife and children — and the offer was accepted. He spent his final days comforting and praying with his fellow prisoners, and died on 14 August 1941. Canonised in 1982, he is honoured as a martyr of charity and is celebrated on 14 August.

As a devotional icon, Saint Maximilian Kolbe is a sign of self-giving love, courage in the face of evil and devotion to the Theotokos — a treasured presence in any prayer corner and a meaningful gift.
