The Significance of Saint Nectarios
Saint Nectarios of Aegina (1846-1920), born Anastasios Kephalas, is among the most beloved saints of the modern Orthodox Church. As Metropolitan of Pentapolis within the Patriarchate of Alexandria he was admired for his learning and piety, yet he bore years of unjust slander and rejection with remarkable humility and forgiveness.
He spent his last years on the island of Aegina, where he founded the Holy Trinity Convent and guided his spiritual children with gentleness. Soon after his repose, countless miracles — especially healings of the sick — were attributed to his intercession, and he is invoked above all by those suffering from serious illness. Canonised in 1961, he is celebrated on 9 November. As a devotional icon, Saint Nectarios is a source of consolation and hope for the sick and a meaningful gift for those who bear his name.
