Saint Panteleimon (born Pantaleon), the Great Martyr and Unmercenary Healer, was martyred around 305 A.D. during Emperor Maximian's reign, with his feast day celebrated on July 27. Born to Eustorgius, a pagan, and Saint Eubula, he was named Pantaleon, meaning "like a lion," but changed it to Panteleimon, meaning "all-merciful," upon converting to Christianity.
Educated as a physician, he dedicated his life to serving the poor, treating those in need without charge, and earning a reputation for his healing. When confronted by other physicians, he confessed his faith and refused to sacrifice to the state gods, suggesting instead that he could pray for a sick man brought before the emperor.
