The Significance of Saint Paraskevi

Saint Paraskevi of Rome, a 2nd-century Virgin-Martyr, is honored for her steadfast Christian faith. Arrested and tortured under Emperor Antoninus Pius for refusing to worship idols, she performed a miracle that cured his blindness, leading to her temporary release. However, she was later arrested again for her faith and eventually beheaded by Governor Tarasius. She is especially invoked for healing eye ailments, and her feast day is celebrated on July 26.

Born near Rome, likely during Emperor Hadrian's reign, Paraskevi was named after "Friday," the day of Christ's suffering. Her Greek Christian parents, Agathon and Politia, had long prayed for a child. Following their deaths, Paraskevi gave away her possessions and became the leader of a Christian community of virgins and widows. At 30, she left Rome, preaching in various cities. She was eventually persecuted for blasphemy in Constantinople under Emperor Antoninus Pius, who accused her of causing recent misfortunes in the empire.
