The Significance of Saint Patrick

This wonderful icon has been created with the technique of lithography and has a double varnish to ensure waterproof and duration in time. The creator of this icon has learned the canonization of iconography in workshops of the Monasteries of Mount Athos, where he was taught both the technique of lithography and the process of handmade artificial ageing.

Saint Patrick, the Enlightener and Apostle of Ireland, lived in the fifth century. Born in Roman Britain, he was carried off as a youth by raiders and spent six years in captivity in Ireland tending flocks, where in his loneliness he turned wholly to God in constant prayer. After his escape he returned home, was ordained, and then — moved by a vision calling him back — went willingly to the land of his captivity to preach the Gospel to those who had enslaved him.

He travelled tirelessly through Ireland, baptising, ordaining clergy and founding churches, and enduring many dangers. In this icon he holds the shamrock, by which tradition says he taught the mystery of the Holy Trinity — three leaves upon a single stem. Honoured in both East and West, he is celebrated on 17 March.

As a devotional icon, Saint Patrick is a sign of forgiveness, missionary courage and faith in the Holy Trinity — a treasured presence in any prayer corner and a meaningful gift for those of Irish heritage or who bear his name.
