The Significance of Saint Spyridon

This wonderful icon has been created with the technique of lithography and has a double varnish to ensure waterproof and duration in time. The creator of this icon has learned the canonization of iconography in workshops of the Monasteries of Mount Athos, where he was taught both the technique of lithography and the process of handmade artificial ageing.

Saint Spyridon the Wonderworker was a simple shepherd of Cyprus in the fourth century who was raised, for his holiness and humility, to be Bishop of Trimythous. He is recognisable in every icon by his distinctive shepherd's cap of woven wicker, which he never set aside even as a bishop — a lasting sign that he had not forgotten what he was.

He took part in the First Ecumenical Council at Nicaea in 325, where, unlettered as he was, he confounded the learned philosophers who denied the divinity of Christ; tradition tells that he explained the mystery of the Holy Trinity by taking up a piece of clay tile, from which fire rose upward, water ran down, and the earth remained in his hand — three in one. Renowned as a healer and a helper of the poor, his relics rest incorrupt on the island of Corfu, whose protector he is honoured to be. He is celebrated on 12 December.

As a devotional icon, Saint Spyridon is a sign of humility, simple faith and God's power working through the lowly — a treasured presence in any prayer corner and a meaningful gift for those who bear his name.
