The Significance of Saint Xenia

Handmade Greek Orthodox Silver 925 – Saint Xenia icon

Greek Orthodox Byzantine Silver 925 icon of Saint Xenia

Our venerable Mother, Blessed Xenia of St. Petersburg (Russian: Святая блаженная Ксения Петербургская [Xenia Grigoryevna Petrova]), was an 18th-century Russian fool-for-Christ. Following the death of her husband, she gave away all her possessions and embraced a life as a holy fool. Centered on God, she sought comfort solely in Him while wandering among the poor of St. Petersburg. She is commemorated on September 11.

Little is known about her early life, including the exact dates of her birth and death. It is believed she was born around 1731 and died around 1803.

Xenia was the wife of Colonel Andrei Feodorovich Petrov, who served as a court chorister. At the age of 26, she was devastated by her husband's death. Overcome by grief, she appeared to lose her sanity, giving away her belongings and wearing only her husband's clothes as she roamed the streets of St. Petersburg among the impoverished. She called herself by her husband's name, Andrei Feodorovich, and focused her life on God, seeking refuge only in Him. During the nights, she often refused shelter, choosing instead to pray in the fields.

When relatives attempted to provide her with necessities, she would respond, “I do not need anything.” The people of St. Petersburg came to love her for prioritizing the Kingdom of Heaven over earthly possessions, viewing her presence in their homes as a blessing.
