The word "Annunciation" refers to the joyful news in Christianity about the imminent birth of Jesus Christ, which was delivered by the archangel Gabriel to Mary. "Annunciation" means the announcement of good and joyful news and is derived from the ancient Greek word ευάγγελος (=ευ+άγγελος < αγγέλω, good + messenger< announce).
According to the Evangelist Luke, the event of the Annunciation took place in Nazareth. In the sixth month of the pregnancy of John the Baptist, the archangel Gabriel, sent by God, appeared to Mary at her home and greeted her with the words: "Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you." (Luke 1:28)
"Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David. And he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end." (Luke 1:30-33)
This greeting caused natural confusion for Mary, who was around 14 years old and had limited social interactions. The way Gabriel greeted her, calling her "full of grace" and "blessed among women," was something she had never heard before, leading her to wonder about the origin of this greeting (godly or not). She might have been reflecting on the example of Eve in the Garden of Eden.
Luke emphasizes that Mary was a virgin, which is evident from her response to the angel when she was told she would be the mother of the Messiah: "How will this be, since I am a virgin?" asking how such a thing could happen without any marital relations. The angel then explained that God's power would make this possible and cited the example of Elizabeth, who, despite being advanced in age, was already six months pregnant. Elizabeth was a relative of the Virgin Mary and mother of John the Baptist.
The Annunciation to the Theotokos is one of the Great Feasts of the Orthodox Church, celebrated on March 25 (OS) / April 7 (NS). Greeks celebrate Greek Independence Day on March 25. This is one of only two days during Lent, the other being Palm Sunday, when fish is permitted.
