The Significance of The Epitaph

This Orthodox icon is a handmade lithography of the Epitaphios (Epitaphion), crafted with double varnish for water resistance and long-lasting durability. It depicts the solemn moment after Christ’s crucifixion, as the Virgin Mary gazes upon her Son with deep sorrow, mourning His sacrifice for humanity.

The Epitaphios (Greek: Επιτάφιος) is a sacred Orthodox icon used in Great Friday and Holy Saturday services. Traditionally, it is an embroidered cloth, but it can also be found in painted or mosaic form on walls or panels. This icon illustrates John 19:38-42, showing Christ’s body being prepared for burial, surrounded by the Theotokos, John the Beloved, Joseph of Arimathea, Mary Magdalene, and angels. Some depictions include Nicodemus, while others show Christ alone, attended only by angels.
