The Significance of The Last Supper

Handmade Greek Orthodox Silver 925 – The Last Supper

Byzantine Silver Icon of The Last Supper

The Last Supper, commonly referred to as the Mystical Supper, occupies a prominent place in most Orthodox churches, typically positioned above the royal doors of the iconostasis. This pivotal event occurred in Jerusalem between Jesus and the Twelve Apostles, just one day before His crucifixion. According to the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus gives thanks for the bread, breaks it, and distributes the pieces to His disciples, saying, "Take, eat, this is my body." Later in the meal, He takes a cup of wine, offers another prayer, and shares it with those present, declaring, "Drink from it, all of you; for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. I tell you, I will never again drink of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father's kingdom." The term "mystical" underscores the sacred mystery inherent in Holy Communion.

In this icon, Christ is depicted as the central figure, often portrayed holding the chalice containing His Precious Blood, which emphasizes the sacramental essence of the Last Supper. Seated beside Him, Saint John the Beloved is illustrated as beardless, receiving a piece of the Body of Christ. This imagery symbolizes the deep spiritual connection between Christ and His disciples.
