The Significance of the Resurrection

In the Orthodox Church the icon of the Resurrection is the Anastasis — the "Descent into Hades." It does not show the moment of Christ stepping from the tomb, but the deeper truth of Pascha: the risen Lord, robed in light, descending to the realm of the dead, shattering its gates beneath His feet and binding death itself.

With outstretched hands He seizes Adam and Eve, raising them from their graves, and with them the whole human race, while the righteous of old look on. It is the triumphant proclamation that Christ "by death has trampled down death," opening the way to eternal life. This is the central icon of the feast of feasts, the Holy Pascha.
