The Title of the Virgin Mary "Amolyntos" and Its Symbolism
The title of the Virgin Mary as "Amolyntos" originates from the hymn of the Apodeipnon (Evening Prayer), which begins with «Άσπιλε, Αμόλυντε, Άχραντε...» ("Spotless, Pure, and Immaculate..."). Additionally, the Virgin Mary is often referred to as Virgin Mary of the Passion because She is depicted holding the body of Jesus Christ in Her arms, surrounded by Archangels Gabriel and Michael, who bear the symbols of Christ’s Passion: the Cross, the Spear, and the Sponge.
The image of the Virgin Mary of the Passion, or Amolyntos, shows Her holding Jesus Christ on Her left side, with Her left hand positioned beneath His bare and kneeling feet. Christ tightly grips His mother’s hand with both of His hands while gazing toward Archangel Gabriel. Archangel Gabriel reveals the key symbols of the Passion: the Cross of Christ’s future sacrifice and the Crown of Thorns used to mock Him.
Above the Virgin Mary’s shoulder, Archangel Michael is depicted holding the Spear, the Sponge, and the Vessel containing the gall and vinegar offered to Jesus during His crucifixion.
