The Significance of Virgin Mary Panagia Paramythia

In this handcrafted Museum quality print on natural pine wood engraved by hand, Virgin Mary icon Panagia Paramythia is portrayed, the Vatopedi Mother of Consolation, or Comfort is an 8th century miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary from the holy and great Monastery of Vatopedi, Mount Athos, Greece. The icon is commemorated January 21.

The following amazing miracle occurred that justifies the change in the original expression of the two figures:In year 807 AD and while the abbot of the Holy Monastery of Vatopedi was inside the temple, he suddenly heard the voice of Virgin Mary who was telling him: “Do not open the gates of the monastery today, but climb on the walls and get rid of the pirates”. The abbot noticed that the face of Virgin Mary came alive while Jesus raised his right hand and tried to cover with it the mouth of Virgin Mary saying: “No my mother, punish them as they deserve it” . But Virgin Mary grasped the hand of her Son and turning her head away from it, in order to free her mouth, she repeated the same words. The latter arrangement is depicted on this icon. The monks, after being miraculously saved by the pirates, thanked Virgin Mary. They named the icon Paramythia, which means “calming down” or restrain. The icon is a wall-painting and is on the right choir of the chapel named after it. Α perpetual lamp burns in front of the wonderworking icon and a Canon of Supplication is chanted in honor of the icon every day while on Fridays the Divine Liturgy is celebrated.

This wonderful icon has been created with the technique of lithography. The creator of this icon has learned the canonization of iconography in workshops of the Monasteries of Mount Athos, where he was taught both the technique of lithography and the process of handmade artificial ageing, which bears the image with the representation of Virgin Mary / Panagia Paramythia or Mercy Consolation.
