The Significance of Virgin Mary the Immaculate Hanging cradle

Handmade Greek Orthodox Silver 925 – Panagia Amolyntos

Greek Christening Baptism Silver 925 Hanging cradle of Immaculate Virgin Mary

The name of the Virgin Mary is derived from the hymn of the Akathist, "Immaculate, Unblemished, Untainted..." which was composed by the monk Paul from the Monastery of Euergetes. In Orthodox iconography, "Amolyntos" is also known as the "Panagia of the Passion," as Christ looks toward the two angels depicted on either side of the Virgin Mary, who hold the symbols of the Passion: the Cross, the Spear, and the Sponge.

A beautiful image of the Virgin Mary, or Panagia, shows her tenderly holding the Christ Child in her arms. According to tradition, the original icon of the Virgin Mary was saved during the iconoclastic period and brought to Mount Athos. It is said to have belonged to Victoria, the wife of a senator, who, in her attempt to protect the icon, threw it into the sea. Miraculously, the icon floated upright on the waves until it reached the shores of the Filotheos Monastery on Mount Athos, where the monks discovered and retrieved it.

Handmade in Greece since 1978.

Every piece leaves our workshop finished by hand — the wood prepared, the image laid, the surface aged and varnished. One at a time, the way Greek icon workshops have worked for generations.

We make them to be lived with: held in prayer, hung in a quiet corner, passed on.

"Come close to God, and God will come close to you." — James 4:8
