The Significance of the Panagia Hodegetria

The Panagia Hodegetria — "She who shows the Way" — is among the most ancient and revered images of the Mother of God. The Virgin holds the Christ-child upon her arm and gestures toward Him with her hand, presenting Him to the world as "the Way, the Truth and the Life." Christ, shown as the King of all, blesses with His right hand and holds a scroll.

Tradition attributes the first such icon to the Evangelist Luke, and the great Hodegetria of Constantinople was for centuries honoured as the protectress of the city. As a devotional icon, the Panagia Hodegetria points the faithful always toward her Son — a treasured presence in any prayer corner and a meaningful gift of blessing for a Christian home.
