The Significance of the Prayer Rope
The prayer rope (Greek komboskini, Russian chotki, Serbian brojanica) is a loop of woven knots used by Orthodox Christians to keep count while praying. On each knot the faithful repeat the Jesus Prayer, letting the hands support the heart in unceasing prayer.
The prayer recited on each knot is:
“Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.”
“Tears of the Virgin Mary” Seeds
The beads of this prayer rope are the natural seeds of a rare plant cultivated by the monks of Mount Athos, known as the “Tears of the Virgin Mary.” According to Athonite tradition, the plant sprang from the tears of the Theotokos; the hardened seeds are gathered and strung by hand into prayer ropes, making each piece a living link to the Holy Mountain.
