The Significance of Saint Charalambos
Saint Charalambos, whose name means "shining with joy," was a priest of Magnesia in Asia Minor who confessed Christ to a great age. Already an elder of more than a hundred years, he was seized during the persecution of the Emperor Septimius Severus and endured terrible tortures with such serene endurance that his very tormentors were converted and came to faith in Christ. He received the crown of martyrdom around the year 202.
From the time of his death he has been honoured as a great protector against sickness and plague, and as a guardian of health and of the fruitfulness of the earth; the faithful invoke him in times of epidemic and illness. He is celebrated on 10 February. As a devotional icon, Saint Charalambos is a sign of steadfast faith, joy and protection — a treasured presence in any prayer corner and a meaningful gift for those who bear his name.
