The Significance of Saint George
Saint George the Great Martyr (Megalomartyr) was a Roman officer in the army of the Emperor Diocletian who, at the height of the persecutions around the year 303, openly confessed his faith in Christ and was tortured and beheaded for refusing to renounce it. For his steadfast courage he is honoured as the "Trophy-bearer" (Tropaiophoros) and is among the most beloved saints of the Orthodox world.
He is most famously depicted mounted on a white horse, slaying the dragon — an image of the victory of faith over evil and the deliverance of the innocent. Patron of soldiers and of many cities and nations, Saint George is celebrated on 23 April. As a devotional icon he is a sign of courage, protection and triumphant faith — a powerful presence in any prayer corner and a meaningful gift, especially for those who bear his name.
