The Significance of Saint Joseph the Hesychast

Saint Joseph the Hesychast (1897/98-1959) was one of the most influential spiritual fathers of Mount Athos in the twentieth century and a great renewer of the hesychast tradition — the way of stillness and unceasing noetic prayer, the Jesus Prayer. Living in extreme asceticism in the caves of Little Saint Anne's and Katounakia, he devoted himself wholly to prayer, vigil and obedience.

Though he wrote no learned treatises, his living example and his luminous letters formed a generation of monks who went on to renew monasteries on the Holy Mountain and far beyond. Glorified as a saint by the Ecumenical Patriarchate in 2020, he is commemorated on 16 August. As a devotional icon, Saint Joseph the Hesychast is a model of prayer, repentance and spiritual struggle — a treasured presence in any prayer corner and a meaningful gift for those drawn to the inner life of prayer.

Handmade in Greece since 1978.

Every piece leaves our workshop finished by hand — the wood prepared, the image laid, the surface aged and varnished. One at a time, the way Greek icon workshops have worked for generations.

We make them to be lived with: held in prayer, hung in a quiet corner, passed on.
