The Significance of Virgin Mary Panagia Glykophilousa

Handmade Greek Orthodox Gold Leaf – Panagia Glykophilousa

A UNIQUE AND AUTHENTIC HANDMADE PIECE OF ART with the representation of Virgin Mary Glykophilousa adorned with Golden leaf. A wonderful artwork by following the technique instilled in Mount Athos - one of the most beloved pictorial themes. This wonderful canvas icon has been crafted on solid natural wood and it was carved by hand. The creator of this icon has learned the canonization of Byzantine iconography.

A wonderful image with Virgin Mary / Panagia the Glykophilousa, depicted lovingly holding little Christ in her arms. According to tradition, the original icon of Virgin Mary / Panagia the Glykophilousa was rescued during the iconoclastic period and was transferred to Mount Athos. She allegedly belonged to Victoria, the wife of a senator, who in her attempt to save the icon, threw it in the sea. According to the tradition, the icon sailed upright in the waves until it finally reached the coastline of Monastery of Filotheos in mount Athos, where it was spotted and picked up by the monks of the monastery. On Easter Monday there is a litany of the icon from the Holy Monastery to the spot where it was found. It is worth mentioning that the nickname Glykophilousa is one of about 500 names attributed to the Virgin Mary, which is one of the most beloved figures of the Orthodox Church.

Handmade in Greece since 1978.

Every piece leaves our workshop finished by hand — the wood prepared, the image laid, the surface aged and varnished. One at a time, the way Greek icon workshops have worked for generations.

We make them to be lived with: held in prayer, hung in a quiet corner, passed on.

"Come close to God, and God will come close to you." — James 4:8
